Logo Design for Product Labels

Designing a logo for your business is a creative endeavor requiring a great deal of thought. Not only do you want your logo design to accurately convey who you are as a business — and look amazing while doing it — you’ll also need to consider how it will look on your product labels. Below are a few considerations to keep in mind when designing a logo for printing product labels.

Keep it Simple

The best logos tend to be simple. The Nike swoosh and Disney’s Mickey Mouse logo, for example, are instantly recognizable, yet they are also about as basic as they get from a graphical standpoint. That said, a simple design isn’t limited to icons and symbols. You can certainly use other elements, taking care to keep the design from becoming to cluttered. Think about how your logo will look on your product labels. If it’s too busy, it will distract from the product whereas a simple, attractive logo could enhance it.

Align Your Logo Design with Your Products and Customers

You’ll also want to consider your product types, how you plan on positioning them, and your target audience. Are you manufacturing luxury products? Edgy products? Eco-friendly products? Bargain goods? Are they marketed to men? Women? Kids? Seniors? Your logo design, color scheme, and font choices should take inspiration from these factors.

Design Logos with Product Labels in Mind

Think about how your label design will look when printed on actual product labels. Your product labels and logo are part of a larger branding strategy, so use that as a guide as you select fonts and colors for your logo and any product labels you later design.

  • Color Options — For example, if you’re planning on using black product labels with white text (it’s definitely doable with color label printers that use white toner), you’ll want to be sure your logo design will look good against a black background.
  • Label Size Constraints — If your products are small, such as lip balm tubes, cosmetics, or essential oils, you won’t have a lot of space for a complex logo complete with a tagline. Is your logo still legible or recognizable when shrunken down for small products? Consider making a separate version of your logo without the tagline element for printing product labels.

Design and Print Your Own Product Labels

Design and Print Your Own Product Labels

Once you’ve designed an incredible logo for your business, it’s time to put it to use on your website, business cards, brochures, and product labels. For your labels, you have two choices, order large volumes of printed labels from a commercial printing service or print your own using a color label printer.

Modern color label printers offer high resolution, full color label printing on demand. They are affordable and easy to use. Best of all, they produce professional high quality product labels that rival those made by commercial printing services without huge minimum order requirements, wasted inventory, and long turnaround times.

Designing and printing your own product labels gives you the ability to change them as needed, too. This opens the door to seasonal product label designs, private labeling your products, collectible products, and more. Likewise, if you need to change a product’s formula, instructions, expiration date, origin, or anything else for that matter, you can quickly do so without the additional expense of a commercial print order or wasted inventory.
